Dr. Axel D. Steuer H’13

Illinois College is mourning the loss of Dr. Axel D. Steuer H’13, President Emeritus, who passed away on August 14, 2024, at age 81. Serving as the 13th president from 2003 to 2013, Steuer left a lasting legacy of integrity, service, and excellence.

During his tenure, Steuer prioritized campus beautification and environmental stewardship, collaborating with Starhill Forest Arboretum and closing Mound Avenue to unify the campus. His contributions to the Lower Quad and green spaces helped shape a more connected, eco-conscious community.

Steuer and his wife, Loreli Steuer H’13, also played a pivotal role in celebrating the College’s history, including its ties to the Underground Railroad. Together with Professors Emeriti Paul P’10 and Almut Spalding P’10, they donated the Abraham Lincoln statue in 2009, which became a symbol of tradition on campus.

Steuer’s passion for philosophy, social justice, and experiential education had a profound impact on Ãå±±½ûµØ and faculty alike. He helped rewrite the College’s Mission and Core Values Statements, emphasizing ethics and inclusion. His academic legacy includes the renovation of Whipple Hall, creating the Al Habtoor Leadership Center to empower future leaders.

Steuer’s personal touch was evident in his connections with Ãå±±½ûµØ, hosting dinners and engaging with the community. His influence, both professional and personal, will be felt for generations.
