IC’s historic Smith House celebrates 100 years

Smith House
In 1915 the Woman’s Building Association of Illinois College was created to establish a place that the women of Illinois College — who at the time made up a third of the student population on the Hilltop — could call their own. The organization achieved this goal in 1924 with the purchase of the David A. Smith House.

This fall, a special celebration of the 100-year milestone is being led by the women of the Smith House Board: Sandy Stallings Bellatti ’70, Diane Taylor Hollendonner ’76, Pam Carney Martin ’82, Nancy Homann Lindsay ’79, Ginny Bramley Fanning ’75, and Martha Summers Vache ’67.

For the past 100 years, the Smith House has served as a hub of activity for women’s literary societies at Illinois College. The home is the regular meeting spot for Chi Beta, Gamma Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon whose members participate in productions that promote confidence, public speaking skills and leadership. The Smith House is also the site where countless lifelong friendships have been forged.

“Many of us likely did not realize the long-lasting value of our involvement in a literary society until after graduation,” Bellatti shared. “The Smith House is a huge part of that. It is a beautiful home that is so lovingly filled with history, tradition and memories of the bonds of sisterhood.”

The group is hosting several celebrations of the Smith House throughout the year including open houses and special events during Homecoming.

A fundraising campaign is underway to commemorate the 100th year celebration. The funds raised will be invested in the house, with plans to add air conditioning to Smith House for the first time if the goal is met. Since the acquisition of Smith House, the use and preservation of the house has been overseen by the Smith House Board. Recent renovations include remodeling the kitchen, adding a first floor bathroom and updating wallpaper. To learn more and contribute to the Smith House renovation fund, visit .
